The Osakis boys track and field team was the last program into the Class A state true team meet through the wildcard format, and head coach Lee VanNyhuis was proud of how his kids climbed the ladder in the overall standings once they got to Stillwater.
Rains held off until the meet was over on Saturday, and Osakis finished eighth in the 12-team field. The Silverstreaks scored 361.5 points. St. Charles won the championship with 573.5 points, while Lewiston-Altura (543) was second and Lanesboro-Fillmore Central (504) was third.
“I think the guys appreciated the whole experience,” head coach Lee VanNyhuis said. “From the send-off, to practicing at a university, to getting dressed up and going out to eat, they had a lot of fun. Finishing eighth is something to be proud of.”
The Silverstreaks had to change some things up in the lineup during the meet. Senior Jacob Backes was limited to the 300-meter hurdles, where he took fifth (42.81), and the pole vault (sixth, 12-00). Jacob Wienlenberg was also dealing with a slight injury and was limited to just the high jump, where he was 11th (5-06).
“We ended up having to use alternates in seven different events because of a couple injuries and other things going on,” VanNyhuis said. “It wasn't ideal as far as scoring the most points as possible, but the guys that stepped in competed fearlessly. I think sometimes you can learn just as much or more by having to work through some adversity.”
Duncan Vandergon helped lead the sprinters by taking ninth in the 100-meter dash (12.08), while Brently Boogaard was ninth in the 400 dash (54.72).
Daniel Savageau had a good day as he took third in the 800-meter run (2:06.69) and third in the 1,600 (4:40.77). Carter Grove (fourth, 10:39.96) and Ivan Barrera (seventh, 10:47.36) added to a nice showing for Osakis’ distance runners in the 3,200-meter run.
In relays, the 4x100 team of Garek Radtke, Luke Goodwin, Duncan Vandergon and Xavier Pahl was sixth (47.74). Radtke, Goodwin, Vandergon and Elliot Dinkel took 10th in the 4x200. The 4x400 group of Pahl, Jerran Kurth, Savageau and Boogaard was seventh in 3:48.57 and the 4x800 team of Boogaard, Kurth, Isaac Loverink and Berrera finished 11th in 9:18.54.
Ben Paulson led the Osakis throwers by taking 11th in both the shot put (41-08.25) and the discus (113-10).
