Wrestling: Strom gets a title to pace Osakis at the Early Bird Invite

Dominic Strom

The Osakis wrestling team kicked off its season on Friday night by traveling to Sauk Centre and coming home in seventh place out of eight teams at the Early Bird Invite.

The Silverstreaks totaled 86 team points, while Bemidji won the invite with 178. Sartell-St. Stephen was second at 164 and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg rounded out the top three with 152 points.

Dominic Strom led all Osakis wrestlers by winning the 195-pound weight class. He won a 3-2 decision in his championship match against Ben Primus of Rocori. It was the first tournament championship of Strom’s varsity career.

Fellow senior Triston Stoetzel almost matched Strom with a title by taking second at 170 pounds. He fell in a tight 6-3 decision in his title match.

“I couldn't be happier for Dominic,” head coach Joey Andreasen said. “He wrestled great today.  Triston also had a successful day but fell short in the championship match. Triston wrestled three tough matches today. I couldn't be more pleased with his start to the season. Ben Duschene, our other senior, was ill and unable to participate.”

Sophomore Logan Grove started things out for Osakis at the 106-pound weight class by taking fourth in his division after winning his first varsity match early in the day.

“Nobody works harder and wants to be successful more than Logan,” Andreasen said. “Logan has come a long way in just one year of wrestling. I believe he has many more wins to come.”

Duncan Vandergon went 1-2 on the day, placing sixth at 152 pounds.

“Duncan lost two very close matches,” Andreasen said. “He could just as well been in the finals but had a few things not go his way. Duncan is poised to have a great season.”

Kale Drevlow added a fourth-place finish at 120 pounds for Osakis. Garek Radtke was sixth at 126, Nathan Kulzer fourth at 132, Carsten Jacobson sixth at 138, Hunter Harlow third at 160 and Brock Faber was sixth at 182 pounds.
