The Minnewaska wrestling team defended its home mats on Saturday as the Lakers won their invite with 232 points in a 10-team field that included Alexandria.

The Cardinals finished seventh in the team standings with 95 points. Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus was second (158.5), and Eden Prairie (146) rounded out the top three.

Minnewaska is ranked third in the Jan. 9 Class A polls through The Guillotine, and the Lakers showed why with six first-place finishes. Jacob Blair won the 120-pound bracket by getting an 8-2 decision win in the title match. Mason Blair won at 145 pounds with a 9-4 decision win. Tyson Meyer was the champion at 182 pounds with an 8-2 decision win that improved him to 25-0, while Tyler VanLuik won at 195 and is 23-0 after a pin in 2:28 in the title match.

Dylan Jergenson was the 220-pound champion after he pinned Will Sather of Eden Prairie in 2:36 in the championship. Jakob Swalla also won at heavyweight with an 8-7 title-match win.

Other podium finishers for the Lakers were Mason Schiffler (113, fourth place), Easton McCrory (126, second), Jacob Lien (126, sixth), Chase Boelke (138, fourth), Max Reichmann (152, second), Ryan VanLuik (160, second) and Adam Larson (170, third).

Freshman Blaze Nelson led Alexandria with a second-place finish at 113 pounds. He got pins in 2:00 and 23 seconds in his first two matches before running into Ty Bisek (21-3) of New London-Spicer in the title match. Bisek won that match by fall in 3:42.

Kelly Johnson added a third-place finish for the Cardinals. He won his final match by a 9-4 decision, while AJ Sparr was also third at 126 with a pin in 4:36 during the third-place match.

Cole Vatnsdal was third at 138. He won a 6-5 decision in his last match of the day. Tate Runge finished fifth at 152, JP Rodel was fifth at 160, and Cody Richardson was fourth at 170 pounds to wrap up Alexandria’s podium finishers.

Osakis hosts home duals

Osakis hosted its annual home duals tournament on Friday night, and the Silverstreaks came out of it with a 0-3 record.

Kimball Area won a 65-9 match against Osakis in the opener. United Clay-Becker edged the Silverstreaks 43-34, and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won a 63-15 match.

Logan Grove (113, fall, 1:58) and Nate Kulzer (138, 7-2 decision) got Osakis’ only wins against Kimball Area. Both also added forfeit wins against United Clay-Becker.

Gaven Cimbura (120) had a 23-13 major-decision win against UCB. Carsten Jacobson pinned his man in 57 seconds at 132 pounds, while Nathan Bjerk (182, fall, 2:26) and Grant Winkle (285, forfeit) added wins in that match.

Osakis’ wins over KMS came from Jacobson, Kale Drevlow and Tyson Hagedon. Jacobson pinned Aaron Jones in 1:27 at 132 pounds. Drevlow got a pin in 53 seconds at 145, and Hagedon won a 12-5 decision at 152.
