The graduation rate for Minnesota's high schools climbed to its highest rate ever, and the three public schools in Douglas County all bested the state average. One school, Osakis, came close to posting a perfect 100 percent graduation rate. The state listed 53 graduates at the school in 2018, with one dropout, making for a 98.1 percent graduation rate.
Back in 2007, Alexandria Industries' first-ever "Fishing for the Cure" ice fishing tournament on Smith Lake near Osakis drew just over 100 participants and raised $620. That turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. Support for the event, which raises money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, has been snowballing ever since. At the 13th annual tourney this past Feb. 16, a total of 1,231 anglers took to the frozen lake, including 208 children — a turnout that pleased the organizers.
A fire that started in an attached garage moved quickly to Jeff and Mandy Lien’s house at 502 6th Ave. W. in Osakis Thursday evening, as members of the Osakis Fire Department fought to keep the fire contained.
